Right now beautifull Aurora on Alaska cam.

Northern Lights appear when ejected matter from the sun collides with particles in our atmosphere. These light up and illuminate the sky. This is mostly seen in a small area around the poles of the earth. Porjus in Sweden lies exactly in that small area.

The plots on this page show the current extent and position of the auroral oval at each pole, extrapolated from measurements taken during the most recent polar pass of the NOAA POES satellite.

What do we mean by "event"? For us an "event" is a substorm, the largest of the auroral disturbances which usually occurs in the hours around midnight. The energy for these disturbances is stored in the earth's magnetic tail and how much energy is stored can be estimated from the size of the polar cap - the area poleward of the auroral oval.

Today Forecast: Auroral activity will be moderate. Weather permitting, moderate displays will be visible overhead from Barrow to as far south as Talkeetna and visible low on the horizon as far south as Bethel, Soldotna and southeast Alaska.
