Ten great Ghost Towns in the West

Spooks and evil spirits? You don't have to believe in that stuff to love a good ghost story. But some of the best tales of fright come from the old mining towns of the American West, where greed for gold and silver drove prospectors and settlers to unspeakable violence and mayhem. They don't call them ghost towns for nothing. Here are 10 ghost towns to put on your Halloween travel list.

Leonid Afremov Art Work

image

I tried different techniques, but I fell in love with painting with oil and palette-knife. Every work of mine is the result of many years of painting; every canvas is born in creative search; every Art work is full of the inner world of mine. Each my painting brings different mood, different colors and emotions. I love to express the Beauty, Harmony and Life of this world in my paintings.

The Seven Wonders of Thailand

A few months back they were talking in the international press about the New Wonders of the World.

What we did was to start putting together our own nominations for the Seven Wonders of Thailand. We divided the nominations into three categories: Natural Wonders, Man-Made Wonders and Symbols of Thailand.

The nomination process is not finished yet. We are aiming for at least 100 nominations nationwide. During October 2007, you can browse the website to see what the nominations we have so far. If you think that you can think of more nominations then please do so now. Then, on 1st November 2007 we will allow people to start voting. After that date we will not accept any more nominations. So, hurry now to make sure that your nominations have been listed already.

Halloween Masks

Why dress as a ghost or a vampire this Halloween when you can disguise yourself as someone genuinely scary--like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or bald-headed problem parent Britney Spears. Our annual collection of Halloween masks highlights some of 2007's most frightening people.

The Ghost in Your Genes

In a provocative report from the frontiers of biology, NOVA explores new findings that call into question the long-held belief that all inherited traits are passed on by our genes.

The fast-growing field of epigenetics investigates hidden influences that could affect not only our health today but that of our descendants far into the future. It now seems that our environment makes small chemical changes to our DNA without affecting the gene's overall makeup.

To put it another way, epigenetics adds to our DNA another layer that acts as a control system of "switches". Experiential factors such as nutrition or stress may trigger these switches and turn genes on or off. These subtle changes can then be "remembered" and passed on from generation to generation, altering inherited traits.

This means the lives of our grandparents – the air they breathed, the food they ate, even the things they saw – could have directly affected us, and that what we do could, in turn, affect our grandchildren.

NOVA explores this fascinating new idea, interviewing top scientists in the field and following what could be a paradigm shift in the way we think about inheritance and genes.

GigaPan aims to help us meet our neighbors across the globe, and learn about our planet itself. GigaPan will help bring distant communities and peoples together through images that have so much detail that they are, themselves, the objects of exploration, discovery and wonder.

The Gigapan camera is a simple robotic platform for capturing very high-resolution (gigapixel and up) panoramic images from a standard digital camera. Sponsored by Google, CMU and the NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group, the Global Connection Project has also developed software which places you inside the panorama and lets you explore.

An earlier version of this imaging technology was developed for the Mars Exploration Rovers; the panoramas created from Mars enabled a simulated experience of being on another planet. The Gigapan project aims to create a similar experience, but for exploration of Earth.

MapJack

Filbert St, San Francisco, CA

MapJack offering the kind of street-level views that Google Maps' Street View feature does, only in much better image quality and with a more interesting interface. MapJack only has San Francisco, for now — and only part of that city. But it’s definitely well done, and an interesting way to browse around the city.

See the difference - the same location in Google Maps' Street View:
