Close-up of the Sun

Japanese scientists have expressed their delight at the performance of the Hinode spacecraft which was sent into orbit in September to study the Sun.

The probe has returned remarkable close-up images of solar features that researchers hope will yield valuable new insights into the star's activity.

Hinode's primary goal is to investigate solar flares, colossal explosions that occur in the Sun's atmosphere.

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan has spectacular and amazing movies and images of the Sun which are well worth checking out.

You can also keep an eye on the NASA's Hinode (Solar-B) page for further updates.

Inside African Art

"The darkest thing about Africa has always been our ignorance of it"
-- George H. T. Kimble, from the book 'Inside Africa'

image

Inside African Art is a project run by three people, Todd in Kenya and Gathinja and Jonah in New York. We have one thing in mind: The promotion and exposure of original fine arts by African artists. Contemporary African paintings are less well known than African artifacts and traditional crafts, and there is little exposure and availability of this type of artwork either in galleries or on the internet.
Yes, there are plenty of mass-produced artworks, African crafts, and Afri-kitch available, but finding an original African painting at a reasonable price is next to impossible - and it shouldn't be!

Beautiful Paintings!

LiveScience: Image of the Day

What is happening to this palm tree in central tropical Africa? It is being stripped of its fronds and slowly converted into a housing complex for Village Weavers.

Village Weavers, in this case, are not local artisans. Rather, they are a type of sparrow, found commonly in central and southern Africa, that weave hanging (pendant) nests. They nest in colonies, sometimes numbering hundreds of nests, in human villages and can greatly alter the structure of the palm trees they inhabit.

Heli-Africa: Hamburg to Cape Town

image

Michael Poliza has teamed up with his friend Stefan Breuer on an 8-week helicopter expedition across Africa. Their long-held dream of flying from Hamburg to Cape Town is taking them across both Europe and Africa at low-level so that they can capture the beauty of both continents and share these birds-eye-view images with the world.

Hacking a Fingerprint

image

In order to fake a fingerprint, one needs an original first. Latent fingerprints are nothing but fat and sweat on touched items. Thus to retrieve someone elses fingerprint (in this case the fingerprint you want to forge) one should rely on well tested forensic research methods. Which is what's to be explained here.

Simple instructions at CCC : How to fake fingerprints.

247 Mini Golf

Keep your score as low as possible in this online putt-putt game. There aren't any windmills, but the sand traps and water hazards make this online mini-golf game plenty challenging.

Controls: Mouse to aim and putt. The arrow indicates the power of the putt.

Ancient Scripts

I have been a great enthusiast for writing systems and linguistics in general, but I could only find meager resources on the web about this subject in those early days. So I went to work, taking class material from Linguistics 11 (Writing Systems) at UCB as well as my own research in dusty libraries.

The aim of Ancient Scripts is not to replace texts books or instructional web sites. Instead, it is designed to give an introduction to writing systems, which hopefully will tantalize the reader into searching for more information on the web or in books and publications.

A compendium of world-wide writing systems from prehistory to today.

Surf and Turf

First, there was the amoeba, then the Coelacanth, then Quiet Riot, then modern man. The evolutionary process has launched us from the damp depths to the grassy plains. From the shrimp appetizer to the fillet mignon - (who's writing this description anyway - get to the point!) In this contest, you're to turn evolution on its pointy ear and create a new species, one of land and sea. Surf and Turf.

Of course all by Worth1000:
