The Boing Boing Effect

It's incredible! Yesterday Ursi's Blog got over 20'000 visitors! First I couldn't believe it, but yes, it was true, all my statistics were very similar.

What's happend?

Do you ever heard of the "Slashdot" effect?

The Slashdot effect is the term given to the phenomenon of a popular website linking to a smaller site, causing the smaller site to slow down or even temporarily close due to the increased traffic. -- Wikipedia

That's what happened to my site yesterday. Mark Frauenfelder put a link to the blog on Boing Boing. Within a couple of hours the traffic went up and up ... over 20'000 ...

And even now at the time of writing this, there have already been over 6,000 people visiting. Fortunately the server could handle the traffic most of the time.

What a nice surprise! Mark - I thank you!

By the way - it was the entry from Friday "Meteorite Collision". If you haven't seen it yet, ckick the link or scroll down a little bit. Soon it is on the next page. Or check the post by Boing Boing: Japanese video giant meteor collision.

Alaska Volcano Observatory

(23 May 2006) --- Eruption of Cleveland Volcano, Aleutian Islands, Alaska is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 13 crewmember on the International Space Station. ...
image

This image, acquired shortly after the beginning of the eruption, captures the ash plume moving west-southwest from the summit vent. ... Ash plumes from Cleveland Volcano have reached heights of 12 kilometers and can present a hazard to trans-Atlantic jet flights. The fog bank visible at image top center is a common feature of the Aleutian volcanoes.

Cleveland Volcano, situated on the western half of Chuginadak Island, is one of the most active of the volcanoes in the Aleutian Island chain extending west-southwest from the Alaska mainland. At a summit elevation of 1,730 meters, this stratovolcano is the highest in the Islands of the Four Mountains group.

Alaska Volcano Observatory

And check out the live webcam images of various Alaskan volcanoes.

AVO has three primary objectives:
- To conduct monitoring and other scientific investigations in order to assess the nature, timing, and likelihood of volcanic activity;
image

- To assess volcanic hazards associated with anticipated activity, including kinds of events, their effects, and areas at risk; and
- To provide timely and accurate information on volcanic hazards, and warnings of impending dangerous activity, to local, state, and federal officials and the public.

Microcar Museum

The microcar, a vehicle born out of need, was a child of its time and became the symbol of a people's spirit.

World War II came to an end in 1945 and Europe lay in ruins. A shell-shocked population came out of the bomb shelters and faced an unimaginable scene of devastation and ruin.

image

image

As if the seemingly endless task of clearing away the rubble wasn't enough, there were crippling shortages of food, raw materials, electricity and gas. Value and worth were measured in Chesterfield cigarettes.

The population collectively rolled up its sleeves and went to work. The astonishing rebuilding of an entire continent over a period of ten years was accomplished through a unity of spirit and purpose unimaginable today. Bright, talented engineers, many out of the former aircraft industry, put their minds to the problems of mobilizing the population under adverse conditions. It's said that the true master reveals himself within limitations and so this focusing of energy and talent resulted in an enormous variety of small vehicles; some successful, others less so - but all of them interesting!

The microcar or "bubble car" came to symbolize this period of renewed energy and pulling together.

The Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum is the largest collection of Microcars in the World, the collection can be viewed on-line or in Madison Georgia, USA.
