Painting the Weather

Rainbows may be among the most beautiful of all weather effects, but they are also powerful symbols. In the first book of the Bible, after Noah?s flood, God creates a rainbow as a sign of his promise never to flood the earth again. Rainbows became symbols of God?s care for the world, his protection of humanity and the promise of future life. In paintings they often suggest hope or are used as a visible way of showing God?s bountiful presence in the landscape - as in Rubens?s Rainbow Landscape.

Cloth and Clay - Communicating Culture

In pre-Spanish society in Mexico, Central America, and in particular South America, the weaving of textiles attained the highest level of quality and artistic expression, employing a huge range of techniques. Textiles were highly valued and served as measures of wealth and status, burial goods, badges of office, and ritual offerings. Intensive efforts were devoted to all aspects of textile production, from the gathering and processing of materials, to the exploration of techniques, and the development of sophisticated designs.

The textiles and ceramics of ancient Mesoamerica are featured in the Cloth and Clay, Communicating Cultures Exhibit at the collections of the Textile Museum of Canada and the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art.

This exhibit organizes Mesoamerican textiles by geography and then by culture so that you can easily access images of our objects and retrieve general information about the different culture groups.

Max-Planck-Institut für Ornithologie zur Vogelgrippe

Das Max-Planck-Institut für Ornithologie spricht Klartext:

image

Thailand's Amazing Insects

image

The site contains over 2000 photographs of insects including butterflies, moths, dragonflies and damselflies, flies, wasps, ants, caterpillars, cicadas, grasshoppers, mantids, bugs and beetles plus spiders and some others (including frogs and snakes). Wherever possible I identify the species. Recent additions are places on a separate page updated every month and there is also a 'Bug of the Week' page updated when I remember. There are also audio files of cicadas, crickets and a few birds.

Other sections have articles on insects in Thailand (especially relating to conservation issues), edible insects in the Thai diet, the results of a survey on Thai people's attitudes to insects, insects in Thai proverbs, insects on Thai postage stamps.

King Abdullah Economic City

image

Central to the mega project is the creation of a 2.6 million square-meter new millennium seaport similar in size to the world?s top ten ports, such as Rotterdam, that would allow even the world?s largest super vessels to drop anchor. With its strategic location on the Red Sea and the instant access to key cities within Saudi Arabia, the port will have a designated area for light industry and logistics and

serve as a natural platform for onward movement of goods to Europe, Africa, Asia and beyond.
