Painting the Weather
Rainbows may be among the most beautiful of all weather effects, but they are also powerful symbols. In the first book of the Bible, after Noah?s flood, God creates a rainbow as a sign of his promise never to flood the earth again. Rainbows became symbols of God?s care for the world, his protection of humanity and the promise of future life. In paintings they often suggest hope or are used as a visible way of showing God?s bountiful presence in the landscape - as in Rubens?s Rainbow Landscape.![]() |

Cloth and Clay - Communicating Culture
| In pre-Spanish society in Mexico, Central America, and in particular South America, the weaving of textiles attained the highest level of quality and artistic expression, employing a huge range of techniques. Textiles were highly valued and served as measures of wealth and status, burial goods, badges of office, and ritual offerings. Intensive efforts were devoted to all aspects of textile production, from the gathering and processing of materials, to the exploration of techniques, and the development of sophisticated designs. The textiles and ceramics of ancient Mesoamerica are featured in the Cloth and Clay, Communicating Cultures Exhibit at the collections of the Textile Museum of Canada and the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art. |
|
This exhibit organizes Mesoamerican textiles by geography and then by culture so that you can easily access images of our objects and retrieve general information about the different culture groups.
