MOMI - Museum of Musical Instruments

When jazz artist Pat Metheny asked Canadian instrument maker Linda Manzer to create a guitar with as many strings as possible, the result was dubbed the Pikasso. A guitar collector was so fascinated by the instrument that he had Manzer replicate it in a strictly acoustic version, without the electronic pickups incorporated into Metheny's instrument. With two soundholes, three necks and forty-two strings in four groups, the Pikasso II is a tour-de-force of the luthier's art.

Neodymium magnets

Neodymium magnets - The most powerful magnets on Earth.

image

The magnets are very powerful, much more powerful than magnets most people have seen, and need to be handled with proper care. The magnetic fields from these magnets can affect each other from more than 12 inches away. Please note that these magnets are fragile. Even though they are coated with a tough protective nickel plating, do not allow them to snap together with their full force or they may chip, break, and possibly send small pieces of metal flying on impact.

Our larger magnets can easily bruise fingers and even break finger bones as they attempt to connect together.

Ouch!

The Empire That Was Russia

The architectural richness of the Russian Empire reflected its long history and the cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity of its people. Prokudin-Gorskii photographed medieval churches and monasteries in European Russia and mosques and Islamic schools in the Caucasus and Central Asia. Many of the buildings he photographed were later destroyed by war or revolution, but others survived the Soviet period and have been restored. In addition to religious buildings, Prokudin-Gorskii photographed houses, country estates, factories, and barns. His skill as a photographer and the technical sophistication of his methods are apparent in the treatment of subjects ranging from church interiors to panoramic shots of cities.

The Great Mosque - Xi'an, China:

The Great Mosque was originally constructed during the Tang Dynasty in 742 A.D. And it has been restored and improved ever since. It currently covers over 13,000 square meters. And it contains many impressive and beautiful archways, pagodas, and buildings including the Introspection Tower, shown here with worshipers passing by.

TyperA - test your typing skills

TyperA is a Java program that tests your typing speed. You get randomly chosen words or sentences and try to type them as fast as possible. A game lasts for one or two minutes. The program counts letters of the correctly typed words and divides it by the test time. This will be your score, expressed in KPM, keystrokes per minute.

The picture shows the "Roulette": The curve traced by a fixed point on a closed convex curve as that curve rolls without slipping along a second curve. The roulettes described by the foci of conics when rolled upon a line are sections of minimal surfaces (i.e., they yield minimal surfaces when revolved about the line) known as unduloids.

For the rolling square, the shape of the road is the catenary image truncated at image (Wagon 1991).
