Pearls of the Caribbean - Tobago

Are you impatient for the next part of our cruise? Here it is: Tobago.

Part 1: Arrival at Scarborough, March 11th 2008, 8am.
When Columbus discovered Tobago, he called it Bellaforma.

Part 2 (start around 01:50): Fort King George - On Mount St. George, a short drive up the hill from Scarborough, you get a beautiful view over the sea and the surrounding neighborhood.

Part 3 (start around 03:02): Along the way - Typical houses in the South.

Further, what will Tobago offer you? Of course: MUSIC!
Part 4 (start around 04:22): Along the way - Steeldrum, Calypso and Folklore

Part 5 (start around 08:53): Impressions of Scarborough. A place where you can watch the islanders. But there isn't much to see in Scarborough - the town itself is rather plain and boring. So let's go back to the ship ...

Part 6 (start around 09:51): Back on board for a cold beer (short)

You naturally expect the sister islands of Trinidad and Tobago are similar. In many way they are. In other ways they are worlds apart.

If the player stops, this could be because the server is overloaded, your Internet connection is slow, and/or overall Internet is slow. You may need to pause it and let the video load a bit more before watching it straight through.

Pixolu - Find what you Imagine

This search engine for images is different to all others. Once you search an image you can refine your search by once again making another search using that image as a key. And there is no end, you can keep drilling down unless you find a more accurate match. It uses Yahoo, Flickr and Google.

Lets make it more clear: First search an image with a keyword (e.g Rose), then select the one you like. Now use that image to search again and get better results, you get roses which are similar to the image you selected.

Oh, and on clicking of the image you can find the details i.e. the exact url and size of the image.

Pixolu - Smart search engine for finding images.
A project by the FHTW - Fachhochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin - University of applied Sciences.

Ah - and don't miss their ImageSorter, an image browsing application, which allows an automatic sorting by color, date taken, name, or size.

Forvo: All the Words in the World - Pronounced!

Forvo is the place where you'll find words pronounced in their original languages. Ever wondered how a word is pronounced? Ask for that word or name, and another user will pronounce it for you. You can also help others recording your pronunciations in your own language.

Example:
The word "Chuchichäschtli" is generally used to identifiy native Swiss German (dialect) speakers and to try members of the other national language communities (French-, Italian- and Romansh-speakers) or foreign nationals (especially Germans and Austrians). The word means "(small) kitchen cupboard" in diminutive-loving Swiss German dialect and contains three consecutive "ch" /x/ (as in the Scottish 'Loch') separated by vowels. The translation in standard German would be "Küchenkästlein".

Word: Chuchichäschtli
Pronunciation in Schwyzerdütsch (Swiss German)
[ˈχʊχːiˌχæʃtli]

Brian's Origami Page

As an artist, I am particularly drawn to Origami because it adds the extra challenge of folding from a square (and I like challenges, sometimes) and incorporates a lot of geometry, which was my more favored sector of mathematics.

While I think there are a lot of cool money folds, I almost never fold money because 1) it's pretty dirty most of the time 2) I'm cheap and want to spend the money instead, and I doubt a cashier would happily accept a dollar fold and 3) money is small. I might be willing to fold a dollar bill, if dollars were a meter square.

Enjoy the Origami Page by Master Brian Chan.

See also his YouTube Channel with some nice tutorials.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2008 is Steve Winter.

I've been stalked by jaguars in Brazil, charged by a 12-foot grizzly in Siberia, and trapped in quicksand in the world's largest tiger reserve in Myanmar. I have flown over erupting volcanoes and visited isolated villages where residents had never before seen a blond foreigner -- or a camera.

Windmills in Eastern Germany

This documentation tries to list all still available windmills in eastern Germany. It was created from 1992 to 1998. After an analysis of historical maps and literature, as well as countless excursions, still 704 windmills in all possible preservation statuses could be found and photographed. The pallet reaches from a heap of rubble, up to affectionate restored, still grinding systems. It shows varietys of windmill types in all modifications, the aesthetic charm even of a ruin and in addition, the problems of the monument protection of a not longer used technology.

Pearls of the Caribbean - Aruba & Start of the Cruise

Maybe - as a regular reader of my blog - you remember: My husband Roland and I were on a cruise through the Caribbean in March 2008. Within 14 days, we visited 11 stunning islands with historical towns, colorful people and spectacular nature. And hopefully, you saw the photo album, includes 229 photos with short descriptions.

Then, in August, I promised to bring up the Video Travelogue to "The Pearls of the Caribbean". Now - finally - I have finished editing all the videos, altogether 12 clips!

I am pleased to share with you our travel experiences - enjoy!

Part 1 - The Intro: The route from the voyage

In the evening of March 7th, we arrived in Oranjestad.
The first thing was boarding the ship MS "Delphin" (German for "Dolphin"). It's a ship more or less unknown outside the German-speaking countries, but a most lovely, small ship indeed. Carrying 450 passengers and a crew of 200.

Part 2 (start around 03:00): Saturday, March 8th. A tour around Aruba, before the ship was leaving on its journey. Just photos, because we forgot the video camera ... uh!

Part 3 (start around 06:06): Yepeee! At 7pm our cruise ship leaved the dock!

Now we were on the way to Trinidad. March 8th was a full day at sea to relax and explore the ship and all of the many options it offers. Soon we found our way around the floating village ...

Fractals discover the true beauty, which stays behind matemathical formulas and computer algorithms. Although the are very similar to objects from the real world, they are 100% digitally generated and every single pixel here is a result of a computer calculation.

But it is more than an artistic affectation; it's a door to the fractal universe, a good starting point to discover what lies beyond your imagination. It's a fun, but it's also a challenge, so take a deep breath and dive in ...

Fractal Experience includes 1042 pictures, located in 18 galleries.
