Basel's Famous Carnival: Fasnacht 2008

Fasnacht Basel Switzerland: 11- 13 February 2008 - starts Monday morning at 04:00 AM (GMT +1)!

The citizens of Basel call their "Fasnacht" or carnival the "drey scheenschte Dääg" (three most wonderful days) of the year.

The three-day event traditionally kicks off with an early morning procession, the Morgenstreich, which starts at 4 a.m. on Monday morning. This is a procession of about 200 illuminated canvas lanterns decorated with paintings and rhymes that make fun of a particular «subject» or local event from the past year. After the city's streetlights are switched off, these lanterns are paraded through the darkened streets, accompanied by the cliques with their drummers and piccolo players.

image

Fasnacht is like one big family party for the whole of Basel, although guests are obviously more than welcome. It has to be said that our carnival, whose origins are deeply rooted in local tradition, does not give visitors much of an opportunity for active participation in the proceedings. And there are bound to be many things you simply will not understand: our Basel dialect, the things we make fun of (usually local events and personalities), and our own special brand of humour with its strong irony. Even so, you are sure to be fascinated by the incredible party atmosphere, the vivid colours of the carnival costumes, the stirring tunes of the drummers and piccolo players, and the weird and wonderful «Guggen» music played by the brass bands.

Basel Fasnacht Online (Most in German)

You can view the Basel carnival 2008 LIVE here. As I said, it starts at Monday morning at 04:00 AM (GMT +1).

In the meantime, you see the "normal" life in the city. Click the links below to activate the cams. Or click here to open in a new window.

59th Sapporo Snow Festival

Should you find yourself in or around Sapporo, Japan between February 5 – 11, 2008, check out the annual Sapporo Snow Festival.

image

The Sapporo Snow Festival, one of Japan's largest winter events, attracts a growing number of visitors from Japan and abroad every year.
Every winter, about two million people come to Sapporo to see the hundreds of beautiful snow statues and ice sculptures which line Odori Park, the grounds at Satoland, and the main street in Susukino.
For seven days in February, these statues and sculptures(both large and small) turn Sapporo into a winter dreamland of crystal-like ice and white snow.
The Snow Festival began in 1950, when local high school students built six snow statues in Odori Park. in 1955, the Self-Defense Force joined in and built the very first massive snow sculpture, for which the Snow Festival has become famous for now. The Festival has grown from these humble beginnings to become one of the biggest and most well known of Hokkaido's winter events.
The Snow Festival is considered to be a festival of international-caliber.

59th Sapporo Snow Festival - February 5 - 11, 2008. (Official Site)

Next Atlantis Launch Opportunity Sunday

The first attempt to launch Atlantis ended hours before liftoff on Thursday when a pair of sensors in its fuel tank failed a routine check. The flight to deliver the Columbus laboratory module to the International Space Station was pushed to Friday and then to Saturday, but NASA decided to spend more time studying the problem.
Now mission managers have decided to try to launch Atlantis on Sunday, Dec. 9. Liftoff of Atlantis and its seven astronauts now is scheduled for 3:21 p.m. (Eastern U.S. time.).

Check out the NASA Website: View live streaming video, and stay up to date with the latest information on the Space Shuttle. You can also look at past missions, streaming and interactive video, high resolution imagery, and sattelite photos.

You find NASA TV also on the left side in my sidebar "watch the best streaming live TV" ...
